I'd like to disagree with your statement that you can't take typical desktop parts and components and "fashion" them into a usable server. Remember that a server is just any system that provides a service. You have a share on a desktop computer? One could call that a file server. True, ECC support, physical-level RAID support, etc. will make for a more "professional" and robust server environment with support for redundancy and a higher desirable workload. For most of the home server users, however, who might want a simple Active Directory domain (or even god forbid Azure AD) in our homes with a share on externally connected drives, I don't see a problem with finding an old computer that would have otherwise gone unused and have had its resources wasted and breathing old life into it by turning it into an Active Directory domain controller in an existing forest, or as a failover redundant server. If I were implementing this for an enterprise, hell yeah, ECC RAM, and RAID all day. But a home server? I'll take a 2006 laptop, run Server 08 on it, and run with it happily. Sure, I'll lose a bit of reliability, but I'm not processing multi-thousand dollar projects on it anyways.
Kelvin Tran (6 months ago)
Don Santos, it's obvious that things like load balancing, parity-protected RAID arrays, high storage, high bandwidth, SNMP-enabled monitoring, robust HVAC and cold/hot lane implementations, ECC-protected RAM, high-speed storage caching, redundant power and network connectivity, high speed network connectivity, scalability, failover clusters, support for specialized clustered file systems, etc. are important for business and enterprise server computing. I don't need to go on for you to see that I agree with your point and that I'd be a fool to disagree. I work as a network/systems admin for an enterprise. I get it. My point, though, was that it doesn't take much to be a server. True, it may not be the most robust thing in the world. But this video isn't talking about datacenter deployments or servers in data/high computing farms. True, those guys require much more robust hardware than an average joe like you or I, but it doesn't mean that that is the minimum for something to be classified as a server. I still stand by my assertion that the video is somewhat misleading in stating that you can't use desktop parts and call it a server. I get its intention, but for home users, it may be discouraging for people who want to deploy a couple of light usage servers just for media access, Active Directory, or even DNS and DHCP implementations. I hope you see my perspective in saying that my comment doesn't apply to business and I agree with you that business users will require much more, but it's just that the video's whole motto of "desktop parts can't make a server" is also misleading.
Don Santos (6 months ago)
Not if you want to be serious about it, were not talking one single server serving 10 people, we're talking business, not some private stuff.

TheEndTrend (6 months ago)
Biggest difference is clustering really. Physical servers are hypervisors (which run several virtual machines, which are similar to what most people know as a "computer"). If/when one of the hypervisor servers fails (not likely or often), another one/s in the cluster just picks up the slack for it. More often servers are taken down for maintenance individually. This is how 99.9% uptime is achievable in data centers. Also, data centers themselves are clustered, so in theory one DC could go out and another would just pick up for it in the case of a company like Google or Amazon.

Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong! This video is B.S. I've worked for 40 years in engineering and I do agree that all this crap is what the IT people will tell you. But the fact of the matter is there is ZERO proof empirically that server hw lasts any longer than desktop hardware. In FACT, at the global fortune 25 corporation that I work for - its the opposite. The Desktop machines have lasted on average 50% LONGER that the "servers". They are cheaper, they are faster and there is no downside. That is empirical real world results. RESULTS talk, B.S. walks.
